Marco Polo: the connectivity app, not the swimming pool game

Posted 7/10/2020

Marco Polo is a video communication app for families and close friends. Unlike other video chat, you don’t have to be on at the same time. Marco Polo’s twist on video communication is as simple as the old swimming pool game with the same name. It’s a walkie-talkie video message app. You shoot a “Marco” video message and send it to your friend who then responds with a “Polo” response video. Speaking face to face is as easy as pressing “Start” and “Stop”.

  • Available for Android and iOS
  • Group or 1:1 conversations
  • Private: Will never show ads. Will never collect data to sell

The real secret to Marco Polo’s success may lie in its simplicity. Unlike bandwidth-sucking real-time video chat platforms like Zoom or Apple’s FaceTime, video messages are exchanged more like text messages. Glitchy broadband won’t disrupt the conversation and recipients are free to respond in their own time. There are no social comparisons, no counts of likes!

A January 2020 study Joya Communications conducted with Brigham Young University-Idaho states that after two weeks of starting to use Marco Polo, they feel happier and “74% of users said their mood was better.”  So, while I know we don’t want to download another app, this one might be one worth looking in to.
