The annual gathering brings finance leaders together for shared learning, new ideas and stronger connections across the Kendal System.
Finance leaders from across the Kendal System gathered at Kendal at Lexington in July to exchange ideas, explore new approaches and strengthen the relationships that support their work throughout the year.
The gathering brought together Affiliate CFOs, controllers and other finance peer group members to discuss shared priorities, System-wide initiatives and opportunities for collaboration.
Connecting Strategy and Collaboration
Participants explored topics shaping Kendal’s future, including strategic direction with CEO Vassar, data analytics with Sean, procurement initiatives with Dan and investment and capital markets insights from Ziegler.
A campus tour gave participants a firsthand look at Kendal at Lexington and reinforced the purpose behind their work: supporting the people who live and work throughout the Kendal System.
Celebrating Felicia Bush
The gathering took place at Kendal at Lexington for a very special reason. Felicia Bush was retiring after serving as the community’s CFO for 20 years, and meeting there gave her peers the chance to honor her in person, in the place she served and among the people who know her best.
A CFO’s best work often happens quietly, in the careful thinking behind every decision that keeps a community strong. This was a moment to say it out loud. Congratulations, Felicia, and thank you.
“Thank you for speaking frankly, acting without artifice, and being willing to say what others may be thinking, with grace and an open mind.” – Amy Harrison

Learning From One Another
For many Affiliate CFOs, the role comes with unique responsibilities and challenges. Kendal’s finance peer group offers a trusted network of colleagues who understand those experiences and can share practical guidance and support.
Through candid conversations about financial systems, vendor implementations and operational planning, participants shared lessons learned and explored ways to strengthen practices across Affiliates.
Connections extended beyond the meeting room. Shared meals and an outing to Natural Bridge State Park gave participants time to build relationships that continue throughout the year.
Exploring Innovation Through AI
One highlight was a full-day, hands-on AI workshop facilitated by Jonathan.
Participants explored tools such as Claude and ChatGPT, applied them to real-world financial tasks and discovered practical ways AI could support their daily work.
A key takeaway was the value of starting small. Whether developing monthly financial summaries, preparing board materials or streamlining recurring tasks, participants were encouraged to choose one practical application and build from there.
The workshop sparked lasting interest, and several finance peer group members are pursuing additional AI training.
Strengthening Leadership and Sharing Knowledge
The gathering also emphasized the importance of effective communication. A Radical Candor session facilitated by Diane encouraged participants to navigate challenging conversations with clarity and care.
Additional discussions covered lessons learned from the Sage Intacct and PCC implementations, giving Affiliates valuable insights as we prepare for similar projects.
Building a Stronger Kendal System
The annual gathering reflects The Kendal Corporation’s (TKC) commitment to supporting Affiliates through shared expertise, professional development and collaboration.
Peer groups play an important role in this effort. They help preserve institutional knowledge, strengthen leadership skills and make sure valuable experiences are shared across Kendal communities.
By bringing finance leaders together to learn from one another, explore innovation and build lasting connections, Kendal continues to strengthen a collaborative System united by shared values and a commitment to the residents, members and communities it supports.
