Kendal at Oberlin Celebrates Completion of Phase 1 Renovations

Kendal at Oberlin proudly celebrated the successful completion of Phase 1 of its Master Plan renovations, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the residences and services for its vibrant community. Recently, a celebratory event brought together approximately 100 residents, staff, board members, construction partners, and other special guests to recognize this momentous achievement.

The renovations include a complete redesign of the Friends Corner Dining Room, the Gathering Room (dedicated to Creative Art Therapies), and the Central Nursing Station for the Stephens Care Center. Additionally, seven existing Residential Care Facility (RCF) rooms were incorporated into the Jameson Neighborhood, Kendal’s memory support area.

Highlights from the event included heartfelt remarks from Kendal at Oberlin leaders and contributors to the project. Joan Villarreal, Board Chair, commended the collaboration and dedication that made the vision a reality, while CEO Seth Vilensky underscored the importance of innovation and resident-centered care in every aspect of the design. Architect Tony Hiti and resident Judi Bachrach, who warmly welcomed attendees to “her neighborhood,” also shared their insights and gratitude.

The official ribbon-cutting moment was led by founding dining services staff member Ramie Ybarra, joined by CEO Seth Vilensky and retired former CEO, Barbara Thomas. They were accompanied by care partner Patty Johnson, music therapist Jara Dell, and residents George and Pete Andrews, symbolizing the unity of staff and residents in creating a thriving community.  Guests enjoyed a selection of snacks and sweets prepared by the dining services team in the beautifully redesigned Friends Corner Dining Room.

Innovative Features to Enhance Well-Being – Circadian Lighting

The Jameson Neighborhood now features a state-of-the-art controlled circadian lighting system, designed to adjust throughout the day to mimic natural daylight patterns. Research has shown that this technology can have a positive impact on individuals with dementia by helping to manage “sundowning” symptoms, underscoring Kendal’s commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for resident well-being.

A Collaborative Effort

The success of this project reflects Kendal at Oberlin’s dedication to fostering a collaborative environment involving residents, staff, board members, and external partners, including Christian Ramsey, Director of Operations from The Kendal Corporation, who lent his expertise to the kitchen and dining renovations.

Looking Ahead

With Phase 1 now complete, Kendal at Oberlin is excited to continue its Master Plan initiatives, further enriching the lives of residents and positioning the community as a leader in innovative senior living. Beginning in spring 2025, Phase 2 of the Master Plan includes improvements to the main kitchen and dining areas and the entrance to the community. The Master Plan kicked off in 2023 and is expected to continue through 2033.
