Kendal at Hanover: A Community of Connections and Creativity

Transforming Perspectives, One Story at a Time

Kendal at Hanover residents participate in something truly rare and meaningful: an extraordinary art program for residents living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. What began as a small, resident-centered initiative has grown into a celebration of individuality, connection and shared purpose that reflects the very heart of the community.

Judgment-Free Artistic Expression

Several times each week, residents gather to paint in a welcoming, judgment-free environment guided by a local artist. There are no prescribed outcomes, no right or wrong ways to create. Instead, each participant is encouraged to follow their own instincts, choosing colors, experimenting with forms and expressing themselves in ways that feel natural. In this space, residents are not defined by memory loss, but by their creativity, curiosity and unique perspectives.

This is where Kendal at Hanover’s distinctiveness shines. Each resident is supported in writing their own story, even as cognitive changes reshape how that story is told. For some, that story emerges in bold colors and sweeping lines; for others, in quiet, repetitive motions that bring comfort and focus. Even individuals who have lost much of their verbal communication find a voice through art, demonstrating that identity and expression endure in powerful ways.

At the same time, this deeply personal experience is rooted in shared values. The program reflects the community’s commitment to dignity, inclusion and lifelong growth. It is sustained through collaboration between residents, staff, artists and community partners, each contributing to an environment where creativity becomes a bridge rather than a barrier.

Public Exhibit

That spirit of unity reached a new milestone with the public exhibition, “Connections-A Celebration of Creativity, Communication and Community.” For the first time, residents’ artwork was displayed beyond Kendal at Hanover’s walls, inviting the broader community to witness their talent and perspective. This partnership with the regional Alzheimer’s Association and Walk to End Alzheimer’s organizations not only amplified residents’ voices but also advanced awareness and understanding of memory-related conditions.

For residents, the exhibition, held throughout October at a local public library, was more than a showcase. It was a moment of recognition and pride. It affirmed that their stories matter, that their contributions are seen, and that they remain vital members of a larger community. For visitors, it offered a powerful shift in perspective, highlighting ability rather than limitation.

This initiative beautifully illustrates how independence and collaboration coexist. Residents create as individuals, guided by their own instincts and experiences, while being supported by a network that values connection and shared purpose. Together, they are transforming not only their own daily lives, but also how others understand aging, memory and creativity.

In this way, Kendal at Hanover remains both distinct in place and united in values. A community where every story is honored, and where, together, those stories create something truly extraordinary.
