R. Agency right %hesitation %hesitation you know how did you get to where you are considering what the times for like that well when I first applied to khobar in nineteen fifty %hesitation and I had a good contact there he was executive vice president and he said well you’re very impressive but we don’t hire women so I went away and took another Of a job i’ll but then someone told me down an opening in the radio and television departments mostly radio in those days I got that job the head of that department was was a wonderful man who believes in the quality and merit so that’s how I started then each step of the way I got promotion that really scared me because there was no man in the agency at all on fact in our department when my boss I became head of all the department’s that they made me head of radio and television and I couldn’t believe it and most people couldn’t believe there was a man there was making a lot more money though I was and %hesitation but he used to go home on the five o’clock train eh from grand central and I stayed in the worked in the office and that was recognized but I remember that that the president of the agency said to me is the shortly after while new Well near you’ve come a long way will seek you’ve come to floor so this happened every step of the way them when I was made a vice president the C. E. O. Said well you know we love you but you’ve gone as far as you can go because %hesitation C. E. O.’s of corporations can relate to a woman so it really took the women’s movement and and some law enforcement each step of the way before we could prove that women could do it and then once we got results %hesitation we proved that we could do it and %hesitation we moved ahead and then we needed affirmative action %hesitation there had been affirmative action for white man for thousands of years and we don’t need affirmative action and so this was one of the laws that I helped to get in force for women you always know that you wanted to work in public relations or that you wanted to work on these tapes of issues %hesitation the The journalist like you I applied at that time the newspapers were fulfilling and there were not as many radio outlets of the road today so %hesitation i’ve got and public relations because those over was at a time but %hesitation i’m very proud I helped introduce us in these three which is one of my %hesitation accomplishments and I am very proud that i’m with the press release from the the sounding of now and there and and %hesitation %hesitation %hesitation lawsuits side the press releases telling about %hesitation lawsuits and incidentally one of our biggest lawsuits against a team to a the C. E. O. Of A. T. And T. Charlie brown at a dinner several years later said losing that lawsuit to now was the best thing that ever happened to A. T. And T. Because it opened the movement for all those talented women have made the company’s stronger Under company I wanted to ask also you know when you look back I think of you know I think of more my grandmother was in the panel at that she lied and I think of the talent i’m online and like some of the things i’m doing now and it’s it’s really called to sort of see that progress and like you know I I just finished my master’s degree %hesitation and i’m the first the first person on either side my family and masters of certainly the first woman i’m just wondering if you also have those kinds of thoughts when you like look back unlike what your grandmother did what your mother debt didn’t in where you are is very very much was not affect my mother was mentally ill and I think how problem was that she was just in the wrong job because most of the world at that time women were just housewives she hated house will pick she hated cleaning frankly she she really did not like taking care of show %hesitation and a gloria steinem this mother was mentally ill and and catherine east one of our Hello other heroes her mother was mentally ill and anglo is is absolutely sure that of her mother has lived today and could have continued your newspaper career that her mother would have been healthier so I I feel very fortunate that I have had that opportunity and and i’m very grateful that I lived in the world where where women fought for women and men fought for this change what you make of november election in in sort of where we are right now I have to say I never expected I was so sure we would win and I think a lot of the problem unfortunately is my field communications people are not getting the news today people used to listen to the the news on on the radio thick the club %hesitation I know that you what’s on television get the daily newspaper I ask people today have How do you get your news and they get his almost directly scatter shot %hesitation from social media or from from pot test but they’re also getting a lot of lives and was obsessed lose so much and I don’t know the answer completely how do we make sure people get the news that people get the troops at and we have to work for this and this is this is job for for you young people now to to work on how could we make sure people get accurate correct information we’ve got you know people turning things around on affirmative action we’ve got you know attacks now in a first the equity an inclusion initiatives and what advice do you have for people eighty for people trying to to push against these things I think we need allies we have to work together and and frankly our own feminist movement would have gotten even further if we had We had had so many flights we fought terribly and and everybody %hesitation I think we succeeded because it almost seemed like a religious crusade for us but in a religion you always believe that nobody else’s as pure as you are so we fought with each other over differences and we have to understand together no we don’t have to agree on everything but we have to have allies we have to have coalitions and we have to work together and if we do will succeed and if we don’t I I don’t know what’s going to happen in the world i’m i’m very worried tuesday on the salon is is coming mission is is part of our %hesitation you know coverage for women’s history month how do you hope people look back on the national organization for women in in in that particular period of the second and well I hope people understand we changed history but it could be done and I hope my book is helping young P. Young people especially young people understand they can make a difference on very pleased at candle how many people come up to me and say well I read the book and I loved it and I won three copies for my grandchildren are my nieces almighty all my nephews and D. So that they will understand what we went through people don’t believe that the as used to say help wanted male hope when it’s enough although will were denied credit colors are or or women couldn’t get a mortgage without a man signing for we had a fight for that %hesitation but we will run so I hope people understand you can win if you fight but you have to work together analysis till strong I just did it a book party %hesitation look at now headquarters in new york city but I was happy to see so many young people there and so many men they were enthusiastic and and they weren’t giving up their angry Frankly I think we we lost the election because of our opponents were angry and maybe they were angrier than we were maybe we were to come to them but whatever it is we have to turn that anger and to fighting productively together of thank you so much I really appreciate you taking the time thank you ariel box is one of the nearly fifty co founders of the national organization for women and the author of the women’s revolution how we change your life is out now through the village press
