Support Kendal's Mission through Kendal Outreach
Kendal has been serving the long term care field for over 30 years through advocacy initiatives. Service to the wider world in a formal way began with our
Untie the Elderly® program, initiated in 1989, which
records more than 200 programs presented in 35 states and Canada. In 2003, in order to provide an appropriate structure for the significant growth and increasing variety of its outreach programs, The Kendal Corporation created Kendal Outreach® LLC. Kendal Outreach® LLC has a staff of full and part time professionals who collaborate with colleagues in provider and research organizations all across the United States, as well as internationally, to elevate the quality of professional practice in our field and thereby contribute to advancing the well being of older people.
Kendal's advocacy initiatives also include:
- Working with AAHSA to establish an accreditation process for continuing care retirement communities, which is now established as CARF-CCAC.
- Working with the state of Pennsylvania to establish a project, administered through Kendal Outreach, called the Pennsylvania Restraint Reduction Initiative (PARRI), which has served 93% of the state's long term care organizations, reducing restraint use by 87%.
- Participation on the FDA's Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup which has
now released guidelines for use in assessing hospital bed systems. The guidelines represent a major step forward in significantly reducing, if not eliminating, death and injury from entrapment.
- Collaborating with Hebrew Senior Life Institute of Aging Research of Massachusetts to form a consortium with 40+ not-for-profit continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) to participate in the use and refinement of a computerized suite of valid and reliable assessment tools.
Results of this project have the potential to enhance the lives of millions of older adults living in a variety of settings. The consortium will be expanded in stages over a three year period to include at least 100 members and serve more than 30,000 individual older adults.
Kendal's operational philosophy is rooted in the Quaker values of respect for the individual, community, equality, and financial integrity. Our long-standing commitment to maintaining the autonomy and dignity of the frail, elderly person through resident-centered care underlies our dedication to promote the well-being and quality of life of those served, around the country as well as in our own communities.
