Kendal Outreach, LLC, Receives Grant to Continue PARRI

Kendal Outreach, LLC has received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare for $619,380 to extend the Pennsylvania Restraint Reduction Initiative (PARRI) through June 30, 2010. Initially a two-year pilot grant awarded to Kendal Outreach in 1996 and focused exclusively on helping Pennsylvania-based providers, the program has produced results that are impressive: through December 2008 physical restraint use in Pennsylvania’s long term care facilities has
been reduced 90% from 28% to 2.9%. READ MORE.

Restraint Free Care Featured in USA Today

On January 30th of this year, Beryl Goldman, Director for Kendal Outreach, was interviewed by a USA Today reporter for an article on restraint use in the USA. The article appeared on February 17th and was commendable in its calling attention to the issue of restraint use in our nation’s nursing homes, and for reporting the reduction of their use, particularly in Pennsylvania where Pennsylvania Restraint Reduction Initiative (PARRI) efforts have been dramatic. Kendal Introduces Values and Practices

February 2009

We are pleased to present the new statement of Values and Practices for the Kendal System. It is the first comprehensive revision of the original statement of Values and Standards, first published in 1987, which has guided the organization over the years. The process of revision took place throughout 2008. It involved the leadership of every Kendal affiliate; stimulated over three hundred sets of comments from residents, staff, board members and others; and recently was affirmed by the boards of directors of all of the Kendal affiliates and of The Kendal Corporation.

The booklet spells out the principles of the Religious Society of Friends on which Kendal values are based, and describes practices that reflect experience gained over thirty-five years, beginning with the earliest Kendal communities. While other organizations measure their success by the bottom line, The Kendal System uses the Values and Practices as benchmarks for success. You are welcome to request a copy by calling 610.335.1230 or 800.220.0042 or by emailing info@kcorp.kendal.org. Or you may open this PDF version of Values and Practices and print it now.
