Winter2013MeetingGround9Severeweatherishappeningwithin-creasingregularitynationwide.Sev-eralKendalcommunitiesweatheredseriousstormsin2012andaewop-eratedwithemergencybackuppow-erormanydays.ConsequentlyallKendalcommunitieshavesteppeduptheirocusonemergencypre-paredness.BarclayFriendsandKendal-CrosslandsCommunitiesKCCrecentlyputtheirdisas-terplanintoplay.AsKendalaliateswithin10milesooneanotherthepossibilityoonecommunityprovid-ingsheltertoresidentsoanothercommunityisreal.A-termonthsopreparationandjointplanningmeetingstheBarclayFriendsKendal-CrosslandsCommunitiesEvacuationandTransportationExercisebeganat1230p.m.September252012.RichLysleExecutiveDirectoroKendalatLong-woodplacedacalltoCarolHansonExecutiveDirectoroBarclayFriendsreportingthatatornadohadhittheircommunityandaskingorshelterorourskillednurs-ingcareresidentsandtwopersonalcareresidents.FiveKCCemployeesandonebraveCrosslandsresidentas-sumedrolesasresidentsorthedrillexerciseandboard-edaKCCbuswithdemographicandmedicalinorma-tioninhand.Eachresidenthadbeengivenaroletoplayandtheyremainedverymuchincharacterthroughoutthedrill.AseachresidentsteppedothebustheyweregreetedbyaBarclayFriendsBuddywhohadbeenassignedtothem.EachresidentwasthenenteredintothecomputersystemevaluatedbynursingstaatBarclayFriendsandthendeliveredtotheirnewbuttemporaryhome.ForKCCthedrillwasaneectivetestothemu-tualaidagreementsthatareoutlinedinthecommunityabandonmentprocedureotheKCCDisasterEvacuationPlan.BarclayFriendsatthesametimecouldtesthowitsorganizationisequippedtosuccessullyreceivetreatandprovidecareoraninfuxoresidentsromanothercontinuingcarecommunityinadisaster.SarahMatasAssistantAdministratoratBarclayFriendswasinchargeoplanningthedrillexercisewithLindaFlewellingKCCEducationManagerandothermembersotheKCCDisasterPreparednessCommittee.TheSeptember25disasterdrillwasagreatrststepindetermininghoweectivealloourplanningandchecklistsandscenariosactuallywereMatascom-mentedollowingthedrill.Whataluxuryitwastobeabletopracticetheskillswemightneedonedaybutpracticewithourgoodriendsandcolleagues.KendalstaandpersonnelromChesterCountyEmergencyServicesandtheAmericanRedCrosswereonhandtoevaluatetheprocessandwhenthedrillcon-cludedaround230p.m.engagedinahotwashorde-brieng.Thedrillwasexecutedsmoothlyandpartici-pantslearnedmanylessonsthatcouldbevitalinarealemergency.ItwasgreatworkingwithBarclayFriendsonthetestoourmutualaidagreementandIthinkbothoourorganizationslearnedalotromtheexperiencecom-mentedRichLyslewhoalsoactedasanobserverortheexercise.AsusualChesterCountyEmergencyServiceswasverysupportiveandinstructivewiththeirpost-drillcommentsbasedonwhattheyobservedduringthedrill.Hopeullythisistherststepinourtwoorganizationscontinuingtocollaboratetoensurethatwearereadyoranyemergenciesthatcomeourway.KendalCommunitiesJoinInTornadoPreparednessExerciseRedCrossandCountyEmergencyServicesStafCritiqueDisasterDrill
