Winter2013MeetingGround5StaResidentsHelpRedesignKendalonHudsonHealthCenterWhenKendalonHudsonopenedin2005itwasun-derstoodthattheHealthCentereventuallywouldneedtobeexpandedtomeettheutureneedsothecommunity.Fortunate-lyaewyearslaterthestateoNewYorkbeganissuinglicensesthatwouldallowresidentstoremaininassistedlivingwithargreatercareneedsthanhadpreviouslybeenpermitted.Inearly2012KendalonHudsonsBoardoDirec-torscreatedtheProjectRe-newCommitteecomprisedoboardmembersresi-dentsandstaandledbyEdHaninBoardViceChair.ThecommitteeconductedaeasibilitystudytoseeiKendalonHudsonsHealthCentercouldberedesignedinaccordancewiththestatesnewEnhancedandSpecialNeedsAssistedLivinglicenses.Thenewlicenseswouldallowresidentstoremaininlessrestrictivemorehome-likesettingsevenwithsignicantmobilitycontinenceanddementiachallenges.Thatchangewouldreducethedemandorskillednursingaccommodationssincetheywouldthenbeneededonlyorshort-termrehabilitationcasesandresidentsrequiringthecontinuoussupervisiononurses.TheKendalCorporationsDevelopmentteamincludingSeanKellyDirectororNewBusinessDevel-opmentandStephenBaileyProjectDirectorhelpedguidetheplanningprocess.TheProjectRenewCommitteealsoretainedDimellaShaeraBoston-areaarchitecttoundertakeacollabora-tiveredesigneortinvolvingmorethan100residentsandstamembers.VisitsinAugustincludedinterviewsandocusgroupswithstaromalldepartmentsaswellasresidentsromalllevelsocareandhealthcenteramilymembers.ArchitectsalsoshadowedstaintheAdirondackassistedlivingresidenceandtheClear-waterskillednursingcentertolearnaboutthepositivesandnegativesoprovidingcareinthoseareas.AttheendoAugustDimellacametoKendalonHudsonoradesignchar-retteatwo-daycollabora-tiveprocessduringwhich48peopleincluding18stamembersexaminedandcommentedondesignideas.Theparticipantsevendidalittledesigningotheirown.AdirondacknurseCarolynRazakandresidentLeonoreMeyershelpedrearrangethedesignothatareaandproposedanumberoimportantadditionsincludingaspecialentrancethatwouldeliminatetheneedtogothroughthemainlobbyjusttotakeawalk.AgathaTwumasi-AnkrahEnvironmentalServicesManagerrecommendedtheinstallationolaundrychutesinAdirondackandClearwatertomovesoiledlinenmorequicklyandsaelyandwithbetterinectioncontrol.CarleneRobinsonClearwaterDiningRoomManagerhelpeddeneavisionorabiggermoreeasilynavigablediningspacethatwouldbefexibleenoughtoaccommodateotherprograms.Thesearejustaewexamplesothegoodideasandinsightsthatemergedasstamembersandresidentsworkedtogethertorenethedesignstoosterincreasedautonomyandenhancesaety.EventhoughKendalonHudsonsnewHealthCen-terisstillatleasttwoyearsawayromcompletionstaandresidentsalreadyhadanenormouspositiveimpactonitsdesign.ArchitectHorstBergeraKendalonHudsonresidentdiscussesadesignideaasPrincipleArchitectDianeDooleystandingrightlistensalongwithfromleftBoardMemberJoanOltmanITSeniorManagerStanMolinskiExecutiveChefSeanWhalenandCynthiaBerenguerDirectorofActivities.KendalValuesToprovidephysicalsettingsthataresensitivetotheagingprocessandthatenhancequalityoflifesecurityandwellness.
