Winter2013MeetingGround11MinaTepperanexperiencedleaderothreenot-or-proftcommunitiesorolderadultsinWis-consinbecameExecutiveDirectoroKendalatLexingtoninDecember.SteveJewelloundingexecutivedirectorsteppeddownJune30ater13yearsatKendalatLexington.Minahasoutstandingleadershipexperiencegainedduringasuccessul27-yearcareerinnonproftseniorlivingthemajorityowhichhasbeeninseniorleadershiprolesincludingthatoPresi-dentoOperationswithagroupothreehighlyregardedretirementcommunitiesinWisconsinsaidJ.HardinMarionchairmanoKendalatLexingtonsboard.From2003to2012TepperservedasPresidentoOperationsorTheJewishHomeandCareCenterChaiPointandtheSarahChudnowCommunityseniorhousingandcarecommunitiesinMilwaukee.Withatotalomorethan400employeesthesecommunitiesjointlyprovideresidentswithresidentiallivingassistedlivinglong-termcarerehabilitationrespitecarememorycareandadultdaycare.AsPresidentoOperationsMinaspearheadedthecon-structionopeningandMedicarecertifcationin2005otheSarahChudnowCommunitya27millioncontinuingcarecommunity.Shealsoledthe25millionredesignandrenovationotheJewishHomeandCareCentera1970surbanskillednursingcommunitytoprovideanenvironmentconducivetoaperson-centeredcarecultureorits160residents.InadditionMinadirect-edtherenovationcompletedin2011oChaiPointanurbanhigh-riseseniorcommunityproviding93independentandassistedlivingapartments.MinawhohasamastersdegreeinbusinessocusedonhealthcareadministrationromtheUniversityoWisconsinMilwaukeeandabachelorsdegreewithhonorsromMcGillUniver-sityinMontrealislicensedasanursinghomeadministra-torinWisconsin.KendalatLexingtonisanamazingseniorcommuni-tyMinasaid.Itisanhonortobeabletoworkwiththeresidentslayleadershipandstatocontinuetocreateandmaintainarichandulfllingenvironmentwhilemeetingevolvingindividualprogrammaticandcareneeds.Ilookorwardtothisopportunity.MinaTepperselectedasKendalatLexingtonExecutiveDirectorThroughitsstrategicplanningprocessKendalatLexingtonhasidentifedthegoalobecomingtheareasleaderindementiacare.OnewaythisisbeingaddressedisthroughtheadoptionotheMusicandMemoryprogram.TheprogramusesiPodsprogrammedwithmusicthatisselectedspecifcallyoraparticularresident.Theactthatmusichasabigeectonmoodandbehaviorhasbeenlong-knownbutbecauseoiPodtechnologythemusiccanbeeasilyselectedandeasilychanged.Multipleplaylistscanbedevelopedoraresidentoneorcalmingoneorenergizingetc.bycompilingthemusicthatismeaningultothatresident.MemorycarecommunitiesusingtheMusicandMemoryprogramreportmanybeneftslessagitationlessresistancetocaremoreresponsivenessincreasedsocializationincreasedappetiteandmostoallthemusicgivespleasuretoresidentswithdementia.Whenamilyandriendsvisittheycanconversewithresidentsabouttheirmusicandsharememories.Residentswithvisualimpairmentcanalsoenjoylisteningwiththehelpoastaoramilymember.InsharedroomshavingtheiPodsandheadphonescangiveanincreasedsenseoprivacy.ThreestamembersatLexingtonhavecompletedMusicandMemorytraining20iPodshavebeenpurchasedandsevenresidentshavebeenidentifedtobethefrstparticipants.KendalatLexingtonisexploringenlistingvolunteersromareacollegestohelpprogramiPodsorresidentsandplanstosharetheresultsothisprogramwithothercommunitiesintheareathatservethosewithdementia.MoreinormationaboutMusicandMemorycanbeoundonlineatwww.musicandmemory.org.LexingtonAdvancesDementiaCarewithMusicandMemoryProgram
