REVIEW: The Posit Science Brain Fitness Program .... By Erma Kareem

 

I was one of the volunteers who participated in the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program during the months of February and March. Part of Kendal at Home's philosophy and statement of prupose is to encourage members to attain their greatest physical and mental potential and to optimize their health and wellness.

I personally believe the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program helped me enhance my brain fitness as I worked through the 40 sessions. Working through these exercises, I found my auditory processing was not as "sharp" as I thought.

The computer-aided program helps you retain and enhance cognitive abilities that tend to decline as you age. This much-researched and scientific program helps you improve your memory, strengthen your communication skills, and sharpen your thinking. The exercises incorporate situations and tasks you come across daily.

The program progresses through a series of six increasingly complex listening exercises. The exercises start at an introductory performance level, from which you progress steadily (at your own pace) to harder levels. In the early exercises the computer-generated speech is very slow by design and I found it to be easy, but somewhat boring. But, beginning around session twelve, the pace picked up and became more challenging. Some exercises are harder than others and the program continues to challenge you session after session.

I liked the immediate feed back given during and after completing each session. This is very encouraging, especially when you feel you're not progressing. There is never any negative feedback. The Brain Fitness Program keeps track of your progress and presents it in an easy to understand format. Sometimes I made great progress, other times not so much.

I would encourage reading the Companion Guide, which explains how to use the program and understand the science behind it. By all means, take advantage of their web site www.positscience.com. This site gives you excellent tips to successfully work through the program, and provides links to additional informational sites. All in all, the program is very straight forward. All you need to know is how to 'click and point' the mouse and connect your earphones.

The program met my expectations. I learned that some cognitive auditory skills needed improvement and I'm working daily to improve them. I would encourage Kendal at Home members to take advantage of the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program.
